Villanova University Hosts Calm Clarity Leadership Workshop for Local First-Generation College Students

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PRWEB)
November 09, 2018

This weekend, Due Quach, author of "Poor and Traumatized at Harvard" and "Calm Clarity: How to Use Science to Rewire Your Brain for More Wisdom, Fulfillment, and Joy" will lead a workshop for first-generation college students at Villanova University.

The Calm Clarity workshop is a neuroscience-based leadership training that offers mind-hacking techniques that rewire the brain to break self-limiting patterns linked to trauma, toxic stress, and poverty.

Students from eight Philadelphia-area universities - including Arcadia University, Bryn Mawr College, Cabrini University, Drexel University, Haverford College, Temple University, Villanova University, and the University of Pennsylvania - will learn new skills and habits that support resilience, academic success, well-being, and forming healthy relationships.

The training draws from Quach's personal experience. Twenty years ago, as a refugee from Vietnam who grew up in Philadelphia, Quach struggled with culture shock, PTSD and financial worry as a first-generation college student at Harvard. She felt isolated and depressed and wondered whether she really belonged and if she could be successful there.

Quach turned to neuroscience and positive psychology and developed mind-hacking techniques to heal her brain, graduate with honors, go on to earn her MBA from Wharton, and build a successful business career.

Due's story of struggle as a first-generation college student from a low-income community is not an isolated one and continues for many young people to this day.

Out of 100 Philadelphia high school students, only 24 enroll in college. Of the 24 who enroll, 14 drop out of college, with debt, but no degree. Only 10% or 10 of these students earn a college degree. [Philadelphia Public School Notebook, “New data: only 10% of Philly students earn a degree,” 2010.]

"My personal mission is to share what I learned with first-generation college students, so no one has to struggle like I did," says Quach.

About Calm Clarity

Calm Clarity is a pioneering social enterprise that uses science to empower people of all backgrounds to overcome adversity and develop a mindset for growth, leadership, and resilience. We are committed to fostering socioeconomic inclusion and addressing unconscious bias, social narratives, and limiting patterns that prevent people from realizing their full potential and becoming the highest expression of who they can be.

Through our social impact initiatives, we make sure that under-served groups facing extreme adversity, as well as elite professionals, have access to world-class leadership training. In addition to enabling senior leaders to improve their performance and impact, the effective tools and leadership development we provide has helped many people in very challenging circumstances break self-limiting patterns arising from toxic stress, trauma, and poverty.

The Calm Clarity book, our corporate training, weekend workshop programs, and speaking engagements support our social impact initiatives to deliver Calm Clarity training to low-income first-generation college students, workforce development programs, and non-profit organizations and schools serving low-income communities.
